"Merci Bien" was written in 2012 during my time in Tanzania. A French gentleman traveling the world for several years made a stop in the town where I lived, this song tells the stories of our few hours together.
lyrics
In the shadows of the corner your hands found mine.
Your eyes, they told me “You’re mine for tonight.”
With a smile you promised “après le deuxième.”
We both knew we’d never meet again.
“Viens” you said, “Viens avec moi,”
As we followed the winding path under the lights.
Just a few words you whispered leaning towards me.
So quiet and shy, kept me wondering:
“Was this just part of the game you played?
Set. Pause, or is it first to engage?”
“Viens” you said, “Viens avec moi,”
With each step further that we walked. Oh, we didn’t look back.
Against the wall you spoke to me, took my face in your hands so gently
Oh those words you said, they play over and again in my head, and…
Against the wall you spoke to me, took my face in your hands so gently
I tried to pretend that this night would never end, oh but then
You walked away just as fast as you came, early on that Sunday.
You asked me to write and I said, “OK,” but I knew, Oh we both knew “Plus jamais.”
In the shadows of the corner your hands found mine.
Your eyes, they told me “You’re mine for tonight.”
With a smile I whispered, “Merci bien.”
I knew, we both knew, oh we both knew
We’d never meet again, no no no.
