about

"Crossing the River" was written in 2006. Friends and I founded a chapter of LiNK (Liberty in North Korea), at New York University, a human rights organization which advocates for the North Korean people. Crossing the River is written from the perspective of a North Korean escaping North Korea across the Tumen river into China.

lyrics

A thirst for change, desiring to be free
Crossing this river will lead me to my liberty
My brothers and my sisters, could your lives be like my own?
It’s worth finding out across this river into the unknown.

What if I decide to go, desert my country, betray all I’ve known to live shackle-free?
I know our clothes are different and our lives are not the same, but one day,
One day soon that will change.
Oh change!

A thirst for change, desiring to be free
Across this river, I can dance in my liberty
My brothers and sisters, our lives will be the same
Oh, across this river, it’s time for change. You’re gonna know my name.

The sun is shining down, warming up my face
And I can’t turn back, no not even to see the shadow left in my place
One last look, the last picture in my head:
My country starving for liberty, filled with walking dead.
One last look.

A thirst for change, desiring to be free
Across this river, oh I can dance in my liberty
The sun is shining down warming up my face
With my brothers and my sisters I will dance because of His Grace.
